The Sony Playstation 3 (known officially as the PS3) was launched on August 18, 2009 at the Sony Gamescompress conference.
Not only was it cheaper, but it had a huge improvement over the first release of the PS3 running cooler and quiter. It sold in excess of a million units in its first 3 weeks on sale.
